This is a known bug of the client in WinXP.
I also use XP and experience this every time a game finishes when i get back. As soon as the menu opens, the client crashes.

I hope Rampastring is fixing it, though i think he sees XP as too old to give any support.
In Win7 and newer the bug doesn't happen.

In Xeron's case it is far more serious (a different issue?) since the client seems to crash right after opening the Skirmish lobby.

Actually, this is wrong. I do support XP (right now, probably not for that much longer), it's just that this particular issue is inconsistent and very difficult to debug and fix. Not only it doesn't occur with Aero / DWM enabled meaning I can't reproduce it on Win 8.1 which I'm running, but it also hasn't happened when I've used the client on a virtual machine running XP.

Win 7 can also get the issue, but only with the classic theme (so with Aero and DWM disabled).

@Xeron: I'm sorry, but I don't know what is causing this issue for you.

Restricted user priveleges wouldn't cause that but a very different error message.

Memory issues might be possible, but most likely it's some problem related to the client and the way Windows XP (and 7 without DWM) draw windows. Could be a bug in the client that only causes crashes on specific systems.

Only one thing seems to be certain; upgrading the OS to Vista or newer and having DWM enabled fixes it. So as XP's usage share shrinks, the problem is going away.

I would bet it has something to do with thread based drawing the user interface.
Like a race condition in an attempt to draw the interface, when the thread is not yet active.

Newer OS might load the interface faster, thus you don't experience the issue, since the thread is faster ready.

Where are you doing the custom interface drawing? In the initialize routine or the form.shown routine which is fired when the form is really ready?


Could you create a version without any custom interface scheme? Using only the default OS graphics? This might solve the issue already, since the client doesn't has to load and draw all the custom stuff.
It might even be possible to just disable the custom form background. This should be very easy to do and I can quickly test it, since i always experience the crash. So it would be easy to check if it's due to this.

Increasing virtual memory and switching 16-bit / 32-bit color setting could be tested.

On development side, other image format leaving PNG might help.

The PNGs are just loaded as Image objects, so I doubt another image format would change anything.

@LKO: You know where to find the source. I doubt it's about loading speed though, with DWM the way windows are drawn is just very different.

Back when I was actively using XP in 2011, I encountered this error with the client every once in a while, but not often.
