You can generate those in game, but where do I find them in the game directory? Want to edit some

IIRC, they're generated using BMPs. So, you can't edit them.

Only the latest generated one is saved afaik. Check your TS folder for map files after creating one.

IIRC the original release version of TS (version 1.07) saves random maps as .map files to the game directory. However, the latest version saves them as RandMap.Sed and RandMap.img or something, and I believe it always re-generates the saved maps with the help of a saved seed value when loading them.

In other words, if you want to edit random maps with FinalSun, get a seperate TS 1.07 installation.

ETS reverts this system back, saves them as .map files.

If they're saved as BMPs, then couldn't you theoretically create a map from them in Final Sun (you know, that importish feature).

Maybe we could put together a special version of TS v1.07 that has removed everything (all the assets, etc) that isn't needed to use the random map generator? Then edit the menus so that only the random map generator is available. Idea would be to run this special version just to generate random maps and save them. Then you could edit those maps in FinalSun and put in your mod's assets, etc?

Afaik the random map generator does not work with mods (adjusting the [BuildingTypes] list screws it up I think), so this sort of "tool" might be handy to have. Of course if someone could make it into a proper standalone program it would be better, but a trimmed down TS v1.07 should be fairly easy to do.

EDIT: Or alternatively the latest version with ETS.

Random Generated maps are all in a .sed file IIRC.

just the values that you set in the random map generator in a readable text.
It's basically a small ini with the settings used to generate the map.

To make it clear:
-the game saves a RandMap.img file which is a bmp format preview image of the last generated map
-a SAVEXXXX.SED file (XXXX is a number) with the ini keys and values for the map generation

here the complete content of such a sed file
Code:
[RandomMap]
Description=test
Width=3
Height=1
NumPlayers=2
Seed=0
Biome=4
Time=1
RegionSize=26
Ruggedness=93
Accessibility=16
WaterAmount=46
Tiberium=67
TiberiumLayout=31
Vegetation=73
UrbanPresence=46
VeinholeMonsters=2
TiberiumWildlife=30
UseIonStorms=false
UseBlueTiberium=true
UseTransitions=false

SED is just a script for the RMG in 2.03.
