Subject description: Summarizing the 2010s
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Welp its that time of the year again as we look forward to a new year. But since this is the last year of the 2010s I thought I'd post the countdown a little differently. Granted I don't post here as often as before, only when there's some sort of development with my mod...

Like the title says, how did the 2010s worked out for you personally? For me, well, I'd like to refer it to as "The Lost Decade". I feel like I didn't achieve anything significant within these 10 long years Confused Felt like I missed out on pretty much everything, be it the most popular shows on TV, continuing my education, or modding. Didn't even get to pass my driving test this December! Mad

Chronologically, this was how my shitty 2010s went:

2010 - 2013: Graduated from secondary school after wasting a extra fifth year in it for a crapass certificate. Regretted not going straight to tertiary education after the fourth year when I had the chance. Ended up being a year behind everyone else in tertiary education as a result. Took up info-communication technology since it was relevant to my interest and was one of the few courses I qualified for.

2013 - 2014: Graduated after 2 years. Could've continued on for the remaining 2 years for a higher cert (I really wanted to learn game design n programming) but my stupidass didn't enroll in time. Next thing was, of course, awaiting to be called up upon for national service. Ended up being a NEET throughout the rest of the year until mid 2014 when I was finally enlisted.

2014 - 2016: 2.5 shitty years in NS. First six months was basic training so a crappy life was to be expected, but the rest of the time was dealing with this big black turdmongler from hell. Me and my buddies just wished to GTFO ASAP. At the very least I got to go on a holiday to Japan with my mom...after holiday season cuz my superior was a cunt who didn't let us go in December #Mad

2016 - 2018: Basically,"What am I doing with my life?" I was a NEET for this entire period, save for at least 6 weeks worth of government call-ups. I Should've plenty of time to goof off but didn't find anything worth doing... Didn't watch anime, didn't really enjoyed gaming, modding was on and off... In a nutshell: Worse year of the 2010s.

2018 - 2019: This was the year I finally stopped being a useless living mass of flesh and got my ass to work. Got a job as a bicycle food courier and while it didn't pay much, I did start getting some hard earn cash. As a bonus, it motivated me to finally have a more healthier lifestyle. The regular "training" I had to attended to or have my ass fined for not being physically fit for my ongoing national service also helped...

2019 -: Welp, its gonna be the "Neo 20s" a few minutes from now. I've been helping my big brother deliver parcels since the first quarter of the year and it definitely pays better. But delivering shit isn't for me tbh Confused

So thats about it... So how did your's worked out again?

In two words? Fucking weird. In the last decade, I started a career, started treatment for mental illness, bought a vehicle that's not a piece of shit, started gender transition and have a new hobby that I greatly enjoy.

But I say weird specifically because I finally came to terms with being transgender and started transition. Everything else pales in comparison to this. I am genuinely happy for the first time in my entire life. Weird feeling.

Well, I started my wonderful journey into the C&C modding community around five years ago.

That's it.
Finished school, started university, still in it...

Not much or anything on my end. Has your decade been more eventful?

Happy New Year to everyone on PPM from here in Singapore! I guess... Damn it! Because of how shitty the last decade has been for me I don't see how I should be excited for this transition... Confused I've wasted half of my 20s doing practically nothing. And I doubt anyone here would give a shit about it. Who am I kidding?

I guess this is the part where I state my New Year resolution, huh? Well, time flies, what has happened has already happened, mistakes were made, the 2010s was a giant shit sandwich that I willing gobbled up because I was retarded back then...

So for the next decade I'd like to actually achieve something meaningful. The job my big brother gave me might be a sign, a stepping stone to finally get serious and realize that age is catching up to me, especially in a brutal meritocratic society I was brought up in. I really wanna realize my dreams or at least get on the right path to achieving it before I hit 30. I can't be delivering parcels or food all my life, getting barked at undisciplined dogs or getting drenched in the rain for the sake of some lazy motherfuker who wouldn't buy food from the restaurant just below his house. I don't want to always have to be dragged around by everyone like tag-a-long 10 year old kid. I'm 26 for fuck's sake! Who tf does that?! I'd like to at least be able to manage my own room and not to have my mom keep insisting I shift MY furniture according to HER preferences. GTFO my room mom! I'd like to REALLY lead my own life. THAT is my objective for the next decade. And also catch up on what I've missed in the previous decade like getting interested in anime again, upgrading my potato PC to the bare minimum of late 2010s PCs at least, actually passing my driver's test this time round, and working on my mod.

Bloody hell, I'm ranting like a little bitch than behaving like the grown-up I'm meant to be Face palm!

Here's a hint for life: faith and hope are overrated. Welcome despair with open arms, and let emotions go.
There is always a way out of trouble; find it, do your part.
Study well in uni, set up a timer/agenda for each day and follow through.

Everything will work out somehow. Just keep moving and don't waste time doing stuff both you and everyone else thinks is stupid.

There, now you have New Years resolutions Smile

This is a criminally terrible statement and patently untrue. Despair nearly brought me to suicide and hope for a better future as the woman I should have been is the thing that keeps me going.

No, you'll never be free of despair but embracing it is the surest way to a self-destructive path.

Why criminal? Whenever something bad happens, shouldn't you just shrug it off and move on?
That, and this is the real world. Unfairness is the rule, the innocent are judged guilty, and the guilty are let loose, sometimes with even less than a slap on the wrist.

I didn't mean to give in to despair, rather accept it and move along. It's a part of life.
What I was trying (and failed) to bring across is that faith and hope alone can only get you so far.
You have to actively do something.

Self-destructive, you say? Meh; the way I see it, all of society as it is now is a ticking time bomb, at least here in Europe/Germany. Can't confirm for the other "western" countries, but I highly doubt it's different.
I know it'll explode, but I don't when.

I'm waiting for the aftermath, and don't plan on enjoying the boom with popcorn like I probably would have wanted a few years ago.

Guys, with all due respect, this decade started in 2011 and it ends by the end of this year (2020). It is not over yet. The count starts on 1. There was never a 0 ad year.

Wrong. Every decade starts from the X0th year. The only exception was the 0th decade, which began on 1 AD and ended in 9 AD.

I can only hope we'll one day move away from this confusing, christocentric way of measuring years, and rather embrace the continuum of human civilization that began over 10 000 years ago.

To summarize how I spent the 2010s: University, conscription, got into relationship, work, got our own house, in that order. In the meanwhile, I've modded TI when I could Razz

Expanding on your own link, you have failed on your own example. There are two official ways to count decades: the ordinal one (which was what I was talking about) and the cardinal one (the method you use). The decade 0s (cardinal way) starts from 1 ad and ends on 9 ad. The 1st decade (ordinal way) starts on 1 ad and ends on 10 ad. There is no 0th decade. It doesn't make any sense. We have started the 2020s, but not the 203rd's decade, which starts next year. Wink.

Anyway, regarding 2010s for me, I've finished my graduation and my master and I've got stuck on my PhD. In terms of personal life, it was a decade that I had learned a lot and had the opportunity to visit several interesting places in the world (while I had schoolarship), made some friends, etc. I don't think it is a lost decade, but I had higher expectations... specially in terms or university and jobs.

Granted, I didn't know of such a method, but you also failed when you claimed the decade wasn't over without specifying which method you used #Tongue I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people using the Gregorian calendar use the cardinal method, anyway. This is the first time I've ran into anyone counting by any other method.

PS. Signature alignment seems to be broken, my sig is hiding part of this post's text.

Nope, honestly, I didn't. When you refer to this decade or a specific decade, you refer to the ordinal method. The cardinal method references are numbers multiple of 10 ending with s.

A lack of a single " can break sites and forums in a very bizarre way. I've fixed your "signature alignment problem" (which was actually an smilie problem).

@FurryQueen & TAK02 : I get it. Life ain't all sunshine and lollipops. It ain't all chaos and despair either. I know I was being very cynical when I made this thread and I barely mentioned any good things that came out of my past decade. For all the shit I went through (and willing got into), I did got some nice things out of it. I made friends during conscription that I still remain in contact with unlike those I made back in school life, I got a job instead of being a useless out of shape NEET, I got to go Japan with my mom for a holiday no matter how tight my budget was, I got to witness my brother getting married, among other things.

I'm not gonna hang myself just because the past decade generally sucked. Believing the next part of your life is still gonna suck is the path to self-destruction. Why even live when you know shit isn't gonna work out for you? I dunno? Ever tried thinking if life wanted to give you something fun to do but it can't give that because you rejected it without even trying it? I'm sure I'll get something worthwhile out of 2020 no matter how small it maybe. I already got a list of things I wanna do this year so what's your's gonna be?

Now you're denying what you yourself wrote before. Even the article you linked to specifies two main ways to refer to decades. But w/e, this is all just semantics anyway Smile

This decade is always referred using the ordinal method for me and for everyone who uses the Gregorian calendar as reference.

??? Literally no one uses the ordinal system when referring to decades, at least not in Europe/North America. Maybe Brazil is different. That, or maybe you're looking for some other term for decade, because "2010s" refers to a decade (lit. "10 years") just as much as "202nd", although I repeat, I've never seen anyone use the latter style.

What you are saying is not true. The use of number 0 is something that has popularized recently, if you take into account the story of maths. That is probably the source of the confusion seen in this subject. There are many people, including here in Brazil, that believe in decades using the cardinal system.

However, our reference is the Gregorian Calendar. The date (today is January, 2nd , 2020 here), is from the Gregorian Calendar. If you use the Gregorian Calendar, you count the decades from the Gregorian Calendar. Considering that Gregorian Calendar started counting on year 1, when you refer to a decade, it is a decade from the Gregorian Calendar: therefore, using the ordinal method.

I really wanted to reply to your post 'freedom fighter', But i was thinking sharing my life in the 2010s would be a bad idea, Since most of the time my life was almost full of 'misery'.

I dunno, I can't complain, a lot happened, a lot needed to happen.

My mother died, but that wasn't very traumatic, I knew it was coming for over a year, and we had a rocky relationship. Sold a house and turned that money into a business, instead of freelancing in a somewhat stressful financial world.

Started to cook more, but eat less. I spent time making furniture and other useful things to make living more comfortable. I started doing physical jobs to work my body instead of just my mind, which also allowed me to get back to modding. I must say had things not turned out this way my mod would be nowhere, and it would feel like an incomplete chapter of my life, but as it stands, I would be pleased with it even if I stopped right now.

My only regrets are not finishing my project car, and one toxic woman I didn't cut off sooner.
