Subject description: New Update Crash

Hello,
I had the auto update update my DTA install to the "u" and it has since crashed.  Reinstalled the game (to the U update) and it still crashed.  Guess I need to update to the last good install point and run from there.  Just letting everyone know about the latest update.  If anyone else has this issue, please post.  Any quick fixes would be appreciated.

Well,

Tried 3 uninstall and reinstalls.  No go.  Reverted back to earlier version.  Everything runs good.  So, don't know what the issue is.  Running Windows 7/64.  Even the newest y crashes.  The error looks like a GFX error.  Had everything set up right.  Unless the new install reset the GFX driver to "Default" and won't let me run the game.  Went into the config file and attempted to reset the drive manually.  It was still a no go.  Anyway, running older version works great.  Maybe next update will work for me.

The DX error detection in 1.176y's client is unfortunately (still) flawed. The next update should fix it. (unfortunately I have no way of confirming this because I don't have a system that would encounter the problem)

Anyone having problem with the new SharpDX version, has problems at different places, probably the developers didn't test it thoroughly. So the entire DX code could be put into the try catch exception construct and when there is problem could switch to XNA. Or even go back to older version of SharpDX if there is not much change.

That's not a good idea and also practically impossible, there's a ton of graphics-related code spread in multiple libraries.

The top-level exception handler could still detect it, but we'll first see if the next update's better check helps. From what I can tell, most incompatibility crashes happen right on startup when the first texture is loaded.

Yes, I tried the auto updater and the full install.  I will attempt to update to 1.176y again.  If it has an error, I will posting.  Busy this weekend but I will try and find time to upload the error message DTA sends.

1.176z has fixed the problem for at least 2 people so far, so it'll likely help in this case too.

For me, 1.176z is same as 1.176y. It switches to XNA on DirectX 11.0. Works fine with DirectX 11.1 on Win7. Win10, it works fine.

Yep,

Still a no go.  Just install old version and it works.  I think that it is definitely a DX problem.  Don't know what broke, but it won't even allow me to load up anything.

What kind of error message do you get? Can you screenshot it?

Are you also certain that you're running the downloaded latest version (1.176z)? It has fixed the graphics issue for multiple people.

You can manually fix the problem the following way:


1) Download and install Microsoft XNA Framework 4.0 Refresh: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27598

2) Go to DTA's directory, then the "Resources" sub-directory and from there start clientxna.exe

I updated the the Usx but the game still does not load.  It give me the error of simply contact the DTA staff.  Seems that I need to play the older version for now.

Did you do step #2?

If yes and it still crashes, could you upload the client.log file from the crash here?

Fixed the problem (sort of).  DTA used to be able to run in 4k.  Now, xna will not run it past 2048 (or something like that.  PLEASE fix the xna to run at 4k.  The game looked beautiful running at 4k.  Thanks.

The XNA version needs to support very old GPUs and so it cannot run at a resolution with dimensions greater than 2048. The DirectX11 version (clientdx.exe) supports 4K.

Yeah, I think that was an issue.  It now runs at 2k though.  You mentioned a client that runs 4k?  Do you have a link?

4K resolution works with clientdx.exe, not with clientxna.exe. There's no link.

You could apply this windows update and try running with clientdx.exe. If it works, then you will get 4k.

The link for Windows update in my previous post is for Windows 7 only, which implements partial DirectX 11.1. It is not for any other operating system. Windows 10 already has better DirectX version.
