what do you mean with "return"?
There wasn't such a feature in the first place as far as i know.

\Edit
just checked and found this
There you also find the answer to your question.

They really do not protrait the shadow. The results were awful and deceiving. Even if I had the best of the ideas, to make a shadow of any 3D picture, I'd need to have the height and depth, which I don't.

And i'm with Banshee here. Generating a shadow from a 2D image without knowing the 3rd dimension would surely result in an ugly mess.

When looking at the 2d image, you clear know what the shadow would look like. You just can't implement it into the program. It at least requires AI machine learning stuff.

Not really, all the program would have to do is copy the sprite, fill it with one colour, and distort it so you achieve the illusion of perspective (think of the "transform by handle" tool in photoshop).

It needs knowledge of height for each pixel to do that, Crimsonum.

If you want a perfect shadow, yes, but IMO a "dumb" autoshadow would already be helpful.

See the shadow on the left, you can achieve this by simple skewing of the sprite. It's obviously not entirely accurate, but it offers a good base that you can chip off unnecessary bits from.
