This bizarrely iconic tech structure is now in Red Alert History, and while the capture bonus, and credit tic are obviously coded in, the all important question is: Does the Oil Derrick give build radius?
Currently the answer is yes. But only for static base defences, and the build radius is obnoxiously small!
This is deliberate, as ideally a player would not be able to build a bunker off a oil derrick's build radius.  Of course testing will ultimately decide whether the derrick's build radius will remain.

Hmm....
I think the best you could do is make the build radius as large possible, but small enough that non-1x1 buildings can't be built without having to resort to some time-consuming precision work.
Otherwise it'd be a work of precision to place a turret at the Derrick's edge, and that'd be bad.

Speaking of building at the edge: are build-radii in C&C 3 limited to circles or can squares/custom polygons be put in through workarounds we haven't figured out yet?
RA3 had square/rectangular build-radii, and it shares the engine with C&C 3.
Surely someone knows a thing or two about hacking EXEs with DLLs?

Yes it is.
I mostly agree with your comment. There is no issue placing a small defence structure at the moment.

OK.

But I still feel the build-radius is tad too... small, compared to the structure.

What you should've done for the pics was first place turrets where you could, and then show us the radius in the same picture for a proper comparison.

EDIT: should've chked OilDerrick_DefenceRadius_01.jpg first.
