"Bootlegged" RA1 Chrono Vortex visual in YR
Subject description: Needs at least Ares 2.0p1.
I've come up with an experimental thing that, like the title says, somewhat resembles Red Alert 1's "chrono vortex" effect, if only in visuals. The ripple, pictured around each of the 8 Grizzly Tanks, grows to a big disc shape, then shrinks back down instead of the ring that expands and disappears.
YR will seriously lag if too many instances of this effect are used at once, so be careful! I had 8 of my test units fire simultaneously when positioned a certain way and the FPS went from 60 to 9.
The ripples won't appear if the game's detail level is "Low", so make sure it's "High".
In the INI files, search for ";gameaddict" (w/ semicolon, w/o quotation marks) and you'll find the appropriate code.
So it's basically IonCannon.Ripple effect played 30 times over each other in 30 different settings, thus not creating a wave, but each next smaller ripple negating/enhancing the bigger wave's effect.

An animated gif would be useful.
1. Exactly.
2. I don't have any recording software at the moment. What would you recommend? QUICK_EDIT

Usually, the included Game Bar recorder does the trick. If you can get W10 to accept YR+Ares as a game. It takes a couple of tests and running, quitting, and then re-running the game attempting to record each run until I got it to work.
Then you have things like OBS and Fraps...
Those two didn't work on my end at all tho... QUICK_EDIT

Holland mentioned gifcam a while ago and ever since i'm using that tool. It's awesome, simple and creates nice gifs.
However i have only managed to work with it in windowed mode TS Client. No clue if there is a windowed mode for RA2.

BTW there is a chrono vortex shp anim in the RA2 files but no corresponding pal file for it though.
How does that work? The RA1 vortex was bending the underlying graphics like the IC ripple. Is the SHP showing some pixels moving around or some kind of AlphaImage?
Do you know the name of the SHP?
I only found CHRONODB and CHRONOSB in conquer.mix, but i doubt they are meant to be a chrono vortex. _________________ SHP Artist of Twisted Insurrection: Nod buildings
Yes I'm referring to CHRONODB & CHRONOSB, they are old unused warp in & out anims for the chrono sphere. They look like a swirling vortex through & several mods have used them to make a chrono vortex.
Now that you mention it, about the only pal that they look good in is the one for alpha images, perhaps that was there original intent. Ares adds the ability to have animated alpha images so it would be possible to used them as such now. _________________
The unused chrono beam anim does use the TS anim pal but the vortex ones dont use any of the pals included in RA2 or TS (I went through them all to double check), they all look like a rainbow drug trip
With a gray scale alpha pal they look fine though. The game doesn't need a pal file for alpha images so maybe that's why there isn't one that matches the vortex anims in the game files.
Vanilla RA2 doesn't support animated alpha images though, so maybe it was unused because of that or it was dropped before the needed code could be added to the game. I can imagine that a large animated alpha image might have caused a lot of lag on computers 20 years ago, so maybe that's why it was dropped. _________________
