I've been playing TS on my Steam Deck just fine, I wanted to play DTA but it wont start. Anyone know how to get DTA running on the Steam Deck?

Which version of TS have you been playing on the Steam Deck? The official Steam distribution by Electronic Arts, or a fan-made version like the one hosted on cncnet.org?

The original game that is on Steam does not use a separate client. DTA has replaced the original game's main menu with a client that runs on .NET Framework 4.5 and DirectX (either version 11 or 9, depending on which is detected as better supported on your system).

Thanks for your reply,
I'm able to play the official Steam EA version of TS on my Steam Deck, but I cant get DTA to launch when I try playing it on the Steam Deck.

Do you think the problem is with the .NET Framework 4.5 and DirectX?

Most likely yes.

If you want to try tinkering with it, you need to get one of these files running, from DTA's directory:

1) /Resources/clientdx.exe (DX11)
2) /Resources/clientxna.exe (DX9 through Microsoft XNA Framework 4.0 Refresh)
3) /Resources/clientogl.exe (OpenGL)

DTA.exe, which is in the main folder, is just a shortcut that normally launches one of these, after detecting which one is most compatible with your system.

I was able to get this to work in 2 ways. The first time I had steam run the installer. This worked and I was able to load into a mission but when I went to the menu the game would freeze and froze steam. I had to restart the PC to get the app to close. I messed around with it a little more and was able to get the game running *perfectly* when I downloaded the full game and added the DTA.exe to the steam launcher. I am forced to play in full-screen mode since that seems to cause the menu issues.

The big issue I have at this point is that when units are selected or receive a command there is lag in the processing of that command so the game will chug for half a second and then the units will do what is requested. The game is playable but its not a very enjoyable experience. I tried messing with all the renderers and back buffer in memory. I also tried adjusting the detail level to low and trying other versions of Proton. I was not able to get the game to run with Lutrus. The DTA.exe hangs when installing with lutrus and the game.exe tells you to "run the game client instead:"

Would be cool if they could show some Linux support and package this in an appimage but really just the performance. I'm using a Legion go with Steam OS installed.

A fan wrote this guide a couple years ago on how they got DTA to run properly on Linux: https://gist.github.com/dderevjanik/6160c773a8bd590bf8e7ef399fe4abd2

No one in our active staff uses Linux so unfortunately official support is not possible for us.
